How to move the process of rewriting forward with three easy steps.
Once the first draft of a novel is completed, how does one tackle the difficult process of rewriting? The following guideline is a tool that can be used to quickly & easily rewrite your novel. #1 Print your Entire ManuscriptMake sure to print a double spaced manuscript, which is necessary for the rewrite. The main reason for printing out the entire completed novel is to remove it from the computer and onto a hard copy version. Reading from a manuscript makes a big difference as opposed to viewing it on a computer screen because the mind will interpret it differently and you'll catch things you didn't see before. Why not to rewrite from a computer - It's easy to delete an entire chapter with the press of a button. Not only that, but it's also easy to fall into endless rewriting of a section without moving forward since the text can be condensed or expanded in an electronic document. Why to rewrite from a hard copy - It confines the writer to the fixed space to make only necessary corrections. The printed manuscript comes with a structure that isn't as malleable as an electronic document and will force the writer to continually move forward as opposed to staying in one place. The goals is to always move forward with your rewrite. #2 Rewrite with a Colored PenUse a blue or red ink pen for the revisions so it stands out more as opposed to black ink. Write as neatly as possible during this process, since it will be needed for the next step. The easiest method is to write between the lines. Create a system where additions/changes lay above the sentence to keep it consistent and also use the carrot symbol(^) to insert the new set of words. And of course to delete something, simply cross it out. #3 Hire a TypistMost importantly, avoid retyping the revisions that were hand written in ink. The reason for hiring someone else to type your rewrite is so another set of eyes will look at it objectively and in a strict fashion to type out the changes exactly what was written. This will avoid any temptation of performing additional rewriting that can occur endlessly on an electronic document. Again, the goal is to move forward and a typist can help tremendously.
